2007 Heisman Trophy Candidate
Never would I have dreamed that I’d be blogging so much about Indiana football, but, hey, only in my dreams has Indiana football been in the top half of the Big Ten standings – until this year that is. And, of course, I want to be among the first to tell you that this coach is for real, this team is for real and, I believe, you are going to see their new redshirt freshman QB Kellen Lewis mentioned as a candidate for, if not win, the Heisman Trophy in the next 2 seasons.
Last week, I quipped that Indiana would Bow to the Champs, but could take it out on Michigan State this weekend. And take it out they did. In a 46-21 home win, Kellen Lewis threw 5 TDs, ran for another (27 yards) against only 1 interception. He has accounted for 11 TDs and said 1 interception in the last 4 games (including the road game against #1 Ohio State). This year should result in a decent bowl game and next year? Maybe an ESPN GameDay in Bloomington? Ah, the dream is still foggy.
Consider this though. In the past 19 years, IU football is 50-98-1 – a meager 34% win %. In the past 10 years, 17-63 – or a grizzly 21% win%. That’s 17 wins in 10 years. In the last 4 years, IU has only won 1 Big Ten game each season. This year, I expect them to finish 5-3 (7-5 overall) – their best Big Ten finish since 1993 – and win their bowl game – likely the Alamo Bowl against a ranked Big 12 team (Nebraska or Missouri). IU may even be ranked next year. Nice job Coach Hep. Remember, you heard the Heisman & ranking hype here first.
