  • Tip #4: Bee Proactive!

    Ok, 3-month hiatus is over.  We’ve had many new visitors checking out the archives, but it is time for some fresh!

    So, here it is, a tip you must follow if you want to be highly efficient.  Bee proactive and no, I don’t mean ‘be’, I mean ‘bee’!  You see, we have been in Florida since I last left you doing maintenance on Jul’s mother’s winter home.

    Lot’s of caulking, scraping, reorganizing, filing and then there were mechanical issues to deal with.  A 3/8” gap in newly installed exterior French doors, new golf cart, new refrigerator and new stove top.

    We did a lot of cleaning on the old golf cart to increase it’s value/appeal to potential buyers.  It worked – sold in just about a week and it looked so good, we actually hated to see it leave.  So we looked at the check again and felt much better about our parting. ;)   A good buy, a good sell. Win-win baby.

    But the moral of the story is that, no matter what issues, events or tasks you have in your life, be proactive, er bee proactive as the case may be.  You see, while tinkering around the golf carts, old and new, Jul and I noticed that there we old mud dauber huts in the crevices of the new golf cart’s seat backs.  Yes, you can jump ahead and see where this is going.

    I ignored it for the time being and left the chore of scraping those out for another day.  TOMORROW will be that other day.  Why?  Because tonight we drove up to the pool and on the way back, I received a very unwelcomed, very sudden shot in what turned out to be a very sensitive, fleshy part of my back.  I know it was sensitive because everyone on the tennis court 200 yards away stopped their games to watch me dance in the parking lot.  Stop laughing.  Really, I mean it.

    And as I reached back to pull the dagger out of my back, my hand took hold of something the size of a tootsie roll and the little SOB drove his dagger deeper.  Out came another manly cry, “Owwwww!”  Shirt is off at this point and I am free from my beast of burden which at this point in the story is the size of small lab rat.  Next year – I’m thinking cobra.

    So, I have learned my lesson: bees sting at night and apparently don’t like ‘mobile’ homes.  Oh yes, and that other lesson, bee proactive.  Do it now and do it right.  Save yourself a future pain in the, er, back.

  • Tip #3: Dare to Dream

    There’s an old saying that there are 3 types of people: those who do, those who write about those who do and those who read about those who do.

    It’s natural to live life vicariously.  It’s certainly easier.  But, Building Your Ideal Life is about managing and reducing risks so that you may find those nuggets of life’s rewards.  And to find and taste those rewards, you have to dare to dream and dare to take risks.  There’s a reason our seminar series is called Block Out The Noise – you must master the art of knowing when those voices around you are helping you to manage risks and when they are keeping you from tangible dreams.  Go on now, fly!

  • Tip #2: Develop Your Top Strengths

    There is something going on in America that I am proud to be part of – it’s called the ‘Strengths Revolution’.

    The take is this: resist the temptation from self-help books, family and friends to become something you are not or to spend much time, energy or money in improving your weaknesses.

    Instead, devote your precious time, energy and money to improving your strengths.  As John Maxwell puts it: let’s say you work on a weakness that is a 2 (on a scale from 1 to 10).  You can spend a lot of your resources and, at best, become a 4-5 – average.  Nobody appreciates or pays for average.

    Rather put your resources into developing a strength – something you rate yourself as a 6-7 – to become an 8 or 9.  That is excellence and people will respect and pay for excellence all day long.

    So apply this to your life and think about reducing the time you spend in weak areas and do what you do best.  You will find happiness and your Ideal Life there.
